SUBTERRANEAN SOUND TUNNEL

FABRICATION BY MATT HARLING

INTERACTIVE INSTALLATION EXHIBITED AT MAGNA SCIENCE ADVENTURE CENTRE, ROTHERHAM FROM JULY 2013.

THE SUBTERRANEAN SOUND TUNNEL EXPLORES THE ‘SONIC HERITAGE’ OF THE MAGNA SITE. THE SOUNDSCAPES INCORPORATED IN THE INSTALLATION ARE COMPOSED AS ‘GHOSTINGS’ OF THE UNDERGROUND INDUSTRIAL SOUND WORLD THAT OCCUPIED THE TUNNELS DURING THE ORIGINAL MELTING SHOP’S LIFE AND AFTERLIFE. THESE COMPOSITIONS ARE ‘REGENERATED’ THROUGH THE CURRENT SOUND-SPACE OF THE TUNNEL, USING THE BUILDING AS AN INSTRUMENT, REVERBERANT CHAMBER, PROCESSOR AND POINT OF SYNTHESIS.

PRODUCED FOR MAGNA IN ASSOCIATION WITH FABULOUS SOUND MACHINES

WOYZECK

SCENE PRODUCTIONS
BASED ON THE PLAY BY GEORG BÜCHNER

PROMENADE PERFORMANCES AT REDBRIDGE DRAMA CENTRE 13TH TO 24TH OF OCTOBER 2014 AND 14TH TO 18TH OF OCTOBER 2013. TOURED THE UK OCTOBER 2013 TO MARCH 2014.

SET AMIDST THE BACKDROP OF WW1, WOYZECK IS A STARTLING DEPICTION OF THE LOWLY SOLDIER PLAGUED BY VISIONS OF THE APOCALYPSE AND PLUNGED INTO HOMICIDAL LUNACY BY THE WORLD AROUND HIM. PRESENTED AS A VISUAL JIGSAW, EXPLODING FROM ONE SCENE TO THE NEXT, USING INTENSE PHYSICALITY, PROJECTIONS, A HAUNTING SOUNDTRACK AND BEAUTIFUL IMAGERY.

THE AGONIZING EFFECTS OF WAR TRAUMA AND THE UTTER DEVASTATION OF THE DOWNTRODDEN MAN STILL RESONATE 200 YEARS AFTER THE PLAY WAS FIRST WRITTEN. AS WE APPROACH THE CENTENARY OF WW1, THIS PRODUCTION TAKES THE AUDIENCE INTO A WORLD THAT IS DISTURBINGLY ATMOSPHERIC, DARKLY COMIC AND HEARTBREAKINGLY POIGNANT.
